Galaxy host Earthquakes hoping to ride home-field advantage to first win

Still in search of their first win of the season, the Los Angeles Galaxy hope to build off a solid effort in their last outing when they host the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday.

The Galaxy (0-11-4, 4 points) remain winless 15 games into the 2025 MLS season and are coming off a disappointing 2-1 loss to San Diego FC on Saturday. Los Angeles scored first in the match, tallying in the 40th minute before conceding the equalizer a minute later. San Diego scored the go-ahead goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time in the second half.

“I think the frustration hit again at the end,” Galaxy coach Greg Vanney said. “The guys have been resilient. … We know we have (consecutive) home games for the first time in the season. We’ve got to bounce back. We’ve got to back up our partners here that at the end of the game made a couple tough decisions and a couple plays. We’ve got to back them up and try to come out on Wednesday fighting and defending our home turf.”

Los Angeles has scored 13 goals thus far, putting the team on pace for nearly 30 over the course of the 34-match campaign after finishing third in MLS last season with 69. It has particularly been a struggle at the other end of the pitch, as it has conceded 35 goals — 15 fewer than its total all of last season.

“I think it takes a little toll on you,” midfielder Diego Fagundez said of the team’s struggles. “It’s tough. The one thing, we still battle. We still fight. And that’s something that we can be proud of. But at the same time, fighting and all this at the end of the day, we want points. We want to win games. That’s what counts in this league.”

The Earthquakes, meanwhile, enter the mid-week match unbeaten in their past five (2-0-3) after playing to a third straight draw on Saturday, 3-3 against the Houston Dynamo.

San Jose (5-6-4, 19 points) scored three straight to erase a 2-0 deficit, with Preston Judd notching his first two goals of the season to kickstart the rally.

It’ll be the first of four straight road matches for the Earthquakes, who are 2-3-1 as the visitor. The two victories have come in each of the past two matches on opposing pitches.

“The team has done well over the last two or three weeks,” San Jose coach Bruce Arena said. “We have two difficult games next week — to go to L.A. against a team that hasn’t won a game in 15 games. They’re going to be very well-prepared to try to get their first one of the year. That’ll be very challenging, as will the game in St. Louis. We have to step up and get it right there.”
