Due to a manual copyright claim by UMG (that I’m still working to resolve) some of the music in this video is either muted or replaced with some of the most hilarious stock music YouTube would let me use.

Also, I’d like to make a special mention of Catilin Koi’s video “Let’s Talk About CATS”.
I wish I’d done my job a little better and found this video before I made my own, and cited her multiple times because she does a MUCH better job than I do at explaining the plot to the original stage version of Cats, especially everything with Grizabella at the end of the show.
if anything about this video has made you excited about learning about the original Cats then I cannot recommend her video enough

The article penned by the audio leads on Cats
I cannot overstate how much of a fascinating read this is, you owe it to yourself to read it!

CATS Part 2

Part 1 of the above article with some interesting insights to the film industry
(I liked the part where they lucked out with the forehead-mounted mics not interfering with the dancers’ somersaults)

Mixing Live Singing Vocals on Cats

Luciano Berio’s Sequenza III performed by Laura Catrani (I love this performance!)

because of course Cats has it’s own wiki

The Toronto Star article about the Orchestra having to work up to 2 months before the film released

John Cage’s Water Walk

The Greenport Peter Pan Fiasco

Maria Joao Pires prepared a different Mozart concerto to the one that was performed

The same thing happened to pianist Tianxu An in the finals of a Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019

Ray Chen breaks a string during a performance (and the concertmaster doesn’t flinch when he has to swap violins like a pro)

The metal pole modern dance thing that we’ve all seen a million times

  1. I assume there is weird music playing over certain parts and audio being taken out because of copyright, but near the end, I felt like a crazy person with my hearing going out unexpectedly.

  2. I just want to say this youtube video masterpiece. I've never been so engaged in a 1 hour long video, let alone, watch one more than once. I'm on my 5th viewing.
    Great fucking job!

  3. can i just say that this is like my favorite video on all of youtube? I know nothing about cats, never seen any iteration of it, i know very little about musicals as im just a passive listener, but this video is just so fascinating and well done and i find myself coming back to it time and time again just because of how much i enjoy it

  4. You are an idiot…..you are correct that the movie is a failure, but all of it….as you state…..find the good bit?…but you can't cause you have zero tallent!

A bit of this of this production is superb……overall trash…..but find the good bit!

  5. Cats is my favorite musical. Because it makes no sense, catchy and fun. It even gets emotional. It's honestly perfect mostly because it's not up it's own ass about it. It's cats and doctor horrible sing along blog

  6. Cats looks and sounds like it was made by a bunch of crazy cat ladies.
Shame, cause the actors have real singing chops. (the stage actors, not the celebrities in the film).

  7. I have cats since 32 years being a grazy cat lady and was looking forward to see cats in theater. But… what a disaster. The costumes and make up are loosing from distance, they look like monsters! the songs… yes ouch cat music🙉 and no story to tell. Such a ennoying disapointment.🙈😕 So sorry for that.

  8. I really appreciate your discussion of tempo rubato. I’ve done marimba solos and it’s such a powerful tool. It should NOT be used in an ensemble setting though

  9. 47:37 At this part i made my headphones a lot louder, because, maybe the clarinet and flute are just quiet, only to be scared away when there is audio again.
