Apple TV’s Cape Fear remake turns it into a paranoid tech thriller
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Cape Fear has always been a thriller about paranoia. And in 2026 there are few things less trustworthy than technology.

Apple TV’s recent remake of Cape Fear is “inspired” by the 1991 film of the same name (Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg even returned as executive producers on the project), which itself is a remake of a 1962 movie that was an adaptation of the novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald. The series is essentially a brand-new story within a similar premise, and it makes a number of significant changes to make it both fit the new episodic format and feel right at home in the present day. One of the most salient updates is how it utilizes various forms of technology to make its characters — and audience — feel increasingly destabilized.

In the just-wrapped 10-episode season, convicted murderer Max Cady (Javier Bardem) is released 17 years into a life sentence after someone else confesses to the crime. And when Cady is finally free, he puts all of his energy into making the lives of the lawyers from his trial — defense attorney Anna Bowden (Amy Adams) and prosecutor Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson), who have since married and had children — into a living hell. Cady describes his prison experience as “death by a thousand cuts,” and he goes about putting the Bowdens through a similar experience of escalating terror and violence.

It starts out small and decidedly low-tech when the Bowdens find a family of skunks — two parents, two babies — dead in their pool. But as things intensify, Cady quickly adds various forms of tech to his arsenal of psychological weapons. In order to get close to Anna’s son Zack (Joe Anders), Cady and his conspirators catfish him both through text messages and chats in a World of Warcraft-style online game. Given how tech is so tightly woven into our daily lives, it becomes a perfect venue for making the Bowdens feel increasingly scared and on edge, which fits right into Cady’s plan.

As the show progresses, Cady utilizes a range of other gadgets and tech to create the sense of foreboding and terror he’s looking for. Drones ominously fly over the Bowden house as their daughter Anna (Lily Collias) does yoga, Tom gets in hot water at his office because of what appears to be an AI clone of his voice, and their home security cameras always seem to glitch out at just the wrong time. These scenes can be creepy in the moment, but they often also have a lasting impact. The footage of Anna, for instance, is made public in an incredibly awkward way, further isolating her from her friends.

The best thing about this version of Cape Fear is how it manages to steadily ratchet up the tension, constantly making viewers, alongside the Bowden family, wonder just what’s real. This isn’t achieved solely through technology. There are plenty of more traditional ways that Cady terrorizes his prey: stalking to the point that he buys a house across the street, getting uncomfortably close with the children, and even some good old-fashioned brainwashing related to a woefully underexplained pseudo-religion. You also can’t discount the sheer presence of Javier Bardem, who imbues the character with an appropriate level of charming chaotic energy, which makes things feel all the more intense. This is a guy who makes eating an ice cream cone seem scary.

Using tech as a quick and easy way of updating a story isn’t a new concept by any means. It can be a simple shorthand for showing when a show takes place; even the new season of King of the Hill has an episode where Hank gets scammed by an AI clone of his son’s voice. But what Cape Fear does so wisely is understand how reliant we are on technology now, and then uses that to add even more uncertainty to its story. In the world of Cape Fear, you can’t trust anything: the messages on your phone, in-game chats with your friends, the cameras protecting your home, even your own voice. And it comes at a time when many of us are becoming more and more distrustful of certain technologies in the real world.

Cape Fear isn’t simply adding modern references to make its story feel more timely. It’s using the trappings of our present day to amplify its disturbing nature, which is something that continues throughout the entire show. Max Cady is the kind of character who will use any tool at his disposal, and in 2026 there are just so many more tools. As Cape Fear approached its finale, major revelations came from a hidden USB drive full of photos, a secret recording on a stolen iPhone, and a screen recording of a FaceTime call. The inclusion of so much technology makes Cape Fear feel like a modern story — but it’s also what gives this version its terrifying new edge.
