The 2026 Honda Prelude is a marvel of hybrid technology

The 2026 Honda Prelude is a marvel of hybrid technology
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

When it comes to enthusiast-geared Honda hardware, the Civic Si, Civic Type R, and Acura NSX often come to mind first for their revvy VTEC (Honda’s form of variable valve timing) engines and playful chassis dynamics. The Prelude, on the other hand, less so. Instead, the Prelude is a technological study — still aimed at driving fun, but by way of integrating clever forms of engineering into a sleek grand touring coupe body.

The second-generation Prelude’s fuel injection was derived from F1. Then the third gen got four-wheel steering way back in the late ’80s. The fourth gen? It was the first everyday Honda to inherit the NSX’s VTEC on both the intake and exhaust camshaft. After taking a long, 25-year break after the fifth gen, the latest 2026 Honda Prelude has perfected fun-to-drive hybridization and commands a price of just over $43,000.

Is it worth the price jump over an everyday Civic Hybrid? Considering the performance calibration and engaging ingenuity underneath, it’s impressive how well it stands apart.

There’s no transmission, even if it feels like there is

Beneath the Prelude’s hood is a 2.0-liter inline-four that isn’t paired to any conventional drivetrain, but rather a two-motor hybrid system with a 1.05kWh battery. For the most part, output flows to the front wheels’ motor via the battery (when it has sufficient state of charge and the throttle isn’t tipped too far), the engine by way of a generator powering the motor, or both to reach its rated peak output.

No matter where the power comes from, Honda calls it an In-Line Motor Configuration. The engine only pairs directly with the wheels through a clutch at highway speeds, but, if the road dips downward, it can effortlessly switch to battery power exclusively at such speeds for better economy.

Combined output between the Prelude’s engine and motors is 200 horsepower and 232 pound-feet of torque, which enables a 0–60mph run in just over six seconds. Despite its two motors and battery, curb weight is just 3,261 pounds. EPA economy works out to 46mpg city, 41 highway, and 44 combined. Then, for added environmental friendliness, Honda says that its low-temperature active catalytic converter has a low level of noble metals, which reduces NOx emissions by 24 percent, and overall hydrocarbon emissions by 22 percent.

There are clever bits throughout to up the feeling of refinement, like a crankshaft balance shaft (not found in Civic Si or Type R) and added damping to the flywheel to smooth out the engine at idle and low RPMs. For chassis refinement that behooves both a comfortable ride quality and engaging dynamics, Honda reinforced the Prelude’s chassis in critical areas, gave it the Civic Type R’s dual-axis front suspension, adaptive dampers to help iron out roadway ripples, and a thicker rear sway bar over the Civic.

In everyday around-town and highway driving, the Prelude rides wonderfully solid across all three modes — comfort, GT, and sport — and acts as any modern hybrid should: seamless power transfer between the battery and generator, hearty torque for off-the-line rips, and a sport mode that doesn’t sacrifice ride comfort for direct steering response and body control.

In fact, its sport mode is made for brilliant handling on snaking ribbons of mountain-top blacktop. The 235-wide Continental summer rubber adorning its 19-inch wheels gripped up well, and, between the slightly stiffened damping, very confident front-end, and big multi-piston front Brembo brakes from the Civic Type R, it was tremendously fun to dice around at an enthusiastic pace. I quickly got into a zen-like rhythm of balancing the throttle, brake pedal, and steering wheel’s perfect ratio. The only downside was when the battery’s juice was low, because uphill sections at times felt slower than the Prelude’s peak output numbers would suggest. Luckily, regaining adequate charge only took a handful of corners.

Then, the cherry on top: S+ Shift. This mimics eight conventional transmission gears by precisely altering the relationship between motor regeneration and the engine, and with more prominent engine notes than in the lesser Civic Hybrid. Its shifts felt surprisingly crisp and, well, like a conventional gearbox, upping the engagement factor beyond what any run-of-the-mill hybrid can offer. It wouldn’t hold “gears” for very long, but did hold them just enough during cornering for maximum joy at exit.

A large portion of my time with the 2026 Honda Prelude included a road trip up to California’s Big Sur for a few days’ getaway from Los Angeles. Besides comfortable interior dimensions and well-bolstered seats (albeit fully manual and fiddly), its excellent forward visibility helped take in all the breathtaking views, and its surprisingly good clearance put my mind at ease while dealing with beat-up rural roads and light gravel trails. Back in the city, its sportier spirit made dipping in and out of gaps in traffic and turning onto roads as, well, efficient as possible, big fun and with little impact to fuel economy.

In fact, after a week of 70 percent highway and 30 percent city driving, as well as not much mindfulness paid to maximizing economy, I still averaged about 38mpg, noticeably less than what the EPA rates the Prelude at, but far better than anything without hybridization and at its level of athleticism.

As Honda’s latest technological study, the 2026 Prelude pulls it off quite well. It’s immensely fun to drive, sports refined hybrid manners, and in turn returns great overall economy. Its downsides are minimal and there’s no doubt that its synthetic shifting has raised a lot of eyebrows. As someone who was initially disappointed when Honda announced that it wouldn’t have a manual transmission option, what it’s done here with clever regen tuning is a very good alternative and worth a try if you’re after the ’Lude’s mix of style, economy, comfort, and fun.
